Keeping Rabbits at the Right Temperature

April 22nd, 2019

Rabbits can easily overheat, and they can also get too cold. Just like us, it is important to adjust the environment throughout the year to ensure that your pet rabbit is able to stay at a comfortable temperature all year round.

The best way to control your rabbit’s body heat is to consider where their hutch is set up. Generally, it is best to keep the hutch in a sheltered area, away from direct sunlight. It is also important to make sure the space is well ventilated for fresh air, but away from any harsh breezes.

Staying Cool in the Heat

  • Keep your rabbit indoors on hot days
  • When the temperature rises, always keep your rabbit’s hutch in the shade
  • Ensure easy access to fresh, cool water, adding ice cubes on particularly hot days
  • Provide a frozen water bottle in the hutch for your rabbit to lean on
  • Feed your rabbit with frozen fruit and vegetables to keep them cool throughout the day
  • If it is mosquito season, proof the hutch with fly mesh to avoid any from getting in.

Keeping Warm in the Winter

  • Keep your rabbit indoors for as long as possible
  • Move the hutch to a well sheltered area
  • Add extra padding and bedding straw to the hutch to help provide more heat and comfort
