Owning a pet bird has become very popular in recent years. Birds come in an array of shapes, sizes, colours and can make great companions. However, like with any pet there are a lot of responsibilities that come with owning one.  We take a look at some factors to consider before buying a bird.

There are many different Bird Breeds, all have their unique traits and personalities. You must consider which breed is right for you. A smaller bird such as a Budgie maybe easier to care for than a larger bird such as a Macaw. It is important research and familiarise yourself with different bird species before making your decision.

Many people think that birds won’t need as much attention as a dog or cat would. However birds require a lot of commitment and time also. Many birds can have a long lifespan meaning your commitment to providing your bird with care and love can span for many years. Therefore owning a pet bird will require time and great responsibility.

You need to consider what your budget is and factor things like food, vet bills, cages, toys and other equipment.

All pets are prone to getting sick, having an accident or sustaining an illness at some point in their lives. It is important to see a trusted veterinarian. There are veterinaries that special in the treatment and care of birds so do your research beforehand.

If you are thinking of purchasing a bird remember to do your research. Before you decide on which species is right for you please consider factors such as:  it’s lifespan, the noise, time, commitment, safety, space, expenses and attention it needs.
